Hanes Yr Ysgol
Fe ddechreuodd addysg Gymraeg yn Y Barri ar Ionawr 9fed 1951 gyda 15 o blant yng nghapel y Methodistiaid yn Nhregatwg. Agorwyd Ysgol Sant Ffransis -(cyn eglwys) yn Heol y Parc ym Mis Medi 1952 gyda 62 o blant. Erbyn 1991 roedd yr adeilad yn llawer rhy fach (am y pedwerydd tro) i ddelio a’r twf yn y galw am addysg Gymraeg ac felly agorwyd Ysgol Sant Curig yn 1992. Cyn bo hir mi gauwyd drysau Sant Ffransis fel ysgol am y tro olaf. Sut bynnag, mi drosglwyddwyd sawl un o’r staff i’r ysgol newydd a mae’n wir i ddweud bod yr hen draddodiadau yn fyw ac yn iach yn eu cartref newydd.
Mi adeiladwyd yr ysgol yn wreiddiol fel Ysgol Ramadeg Merched y Barri yn 1911. Heddiw mae’n ysgol gynradd gyda enw nawddsant yr hen eglwys Porthceri sydd tua dwy filltir o’r safle. Addaswyd yr adeilad ar gyfer ei defnydd newydd ac mi gadwyd nodweddion braf pensaerniaeth addysgol degawd cyntaf yr ugeinfed ganrif. Dyddiad adeiladu’r ysgol Yr oedd 92 o blant ar y cofrestr yn 1992 ac erbyn hyn mae’r nifer wedi codi yn agos i 400. Yn ogystal ac Adran y Babanod a’r Adran Iau mae gennym Adran Feithrin sy’n cael ei lleoli ynghyd a’r Dosbarth Derbyn mewn adeilad ar wahan, sef Uned y Blynyddoedd Cynnar.
Mae Ysgol Sant Curig yng nghanol Y Barri gyda Heol y Coleg ar y naill ochr a Heol Buttrils ar y llall, ond eto yr ydym yn ffodus i feddiannu a safle gwyrdd eang.
Mae’r plant yn dod o bob rhan o’r dref ac mae’r dalgylch yn cynnwys Rhws a Gwenfo. Mae bws ysgol neu dacsi ar gael i blant sydd yn byw tu hwnt i ddwy filltir a hanner o’r ysgol.
Heddiw, mae’r ysgol yn un o dair ysgol gynradd Gymraeg yn y Barri. Yr ydym yn cydweithio yn hapus gyda’r rhai eraill- Ysgol Sant Baruc ac Ysgol Gwaun y Nant- ac hefyd gyda’r ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg- Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, sydd tua hanner milltir o’n safle ni.
Yr ydym yn hyderus bod ein disgyblion yn elwa o draddodiadau cadarn sy’n dal i ddatblygu tra’n cyfrannu ato yr un pryd.
History of the School
Welsh medium education began in Barry in Cadoxton Methodist Chapel on 9th January 1951 with 15 children. Ysgol Sant Ffransis – a former church in Park Road, opened in September 1952 with 62 children. The catchment area stretched from Penarth to Cowbridge.
By 1990 this building was much too small (for the fourth time) to cope with the growth in demand for Welsh medium education. Another Welsh medium school –Ysgol Sant Curig- was opened in 1992. and some time later St. Ffransis closed as a school for the last time. However, many of the staff of the old school transferred to the new one and it is certainly true to say that the old traditions are alive and well in their new home.
The school was originally built in 1911 as the Barry Girls Grammar School. Today it is a Primary School bearing the name of the patron saint of the ancient Porthceri Church which stands about two miles away.
Excellent work has been done in converting the building to its new use but fine features typical of early Twentieth Century School architecture have been retained.
There were 92 children on the register in 1992, by now the number has risen to almost 400. As well as the Infant Department and the Junior Department, we have a Nursery which is located along with the Reception Class in its own block – the Early Years Unit.
Ysgol Sant Curig is centrally located in Barry, being flanked by College Road and Buttrills Road, yet we are fortunate to have an extensive green field site. Children come from all parts of the town and our catchment area also includes Rhoose and Wenvoe. A school bus or taxi is provided for children who live over two and a half miles from school.
Our school is now one of three Welsh medium primary schools in Barry. We co-operate happily with the others- Ysgol Sant Baruc and Ysgol Gwaun y Nant- and also with our secondary school- Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg- which is about half a mile away. We feel that our pupils are benefiting from and contributing to a well established tradition of excellence which is still developing.
